Introduction
A native of Weymouth, Mass., Klein was commissioned in May, 1981 upon graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. She earned her Masters of Education from the University of Southern Maine in 1999.

Klein was designated a naval flight officer in 1983. Her operational assignments include the Ironmen of Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron 3 in Barbers Point, Hawaii from 1983 to 1987 and her department head tour with the Ironmen, aboard Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City. She served aboard the forward-deployed USS Kitty Hawk Battle Group staff as the N6, participating in operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Upon completion of major command, she was assigned as chief of staff for the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Strike Group.

 Her command and leadership tours include command of VQ-3, where the Ironmen won the Battle E and the Maintenance Excellence Award. She served as commander, Task Force 124 and Strategic Communications Wing 1. From December 2006 to June 2008 Klein was the 82nd commandant of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy.

Klein’s shore assignments include the staff of commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, and as an aviation detailer at Naval Military Personnel Command. She served in the White House Military Office in the Presidential Contingency Plans Directorate from 1994 to 1996. Klein was selected as a Brookings legislative fellow in 1997 and served on the staff of Senator Olympia Snowe briefing defense issues. Her first flag assignment was as the operations director at Naval Network Warfare Command.

Klein has accumulated more than 4,500 flight hours in the EC-130 and the E-6. Her personal awards include the Legion of Merit (four awards), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
