"With great power comes great responsibility."

Google is doing a lot of great things -- but there is also great responsibility to go with these, that is not being handled as well. Google has been responsible for causing the imprisonment and torture of Chinese people within China, by releasing personal emails and information to the totalitarian Chinese government. The rationale for this is "we have to follow the laws of the countries in which we operate" -- which is strikingly similar to the rationale of the Nazi guards "we were just following orders".  I know this is a difficult issue. The lure of money causes many issues of evil to become fuzzy.

Chances are good that you reading this are a white Westerner. Why should you care? Well if just "being human" isn't good enough -- consider that the massive amounts of data that Google (and Yahoo!, and MSN, and many others) hold about people (this means you) is a treasure house for totalitarian governments. And because your government is (nominally) not totalitarian now, doesn't mean it won't be in future.

Google itself says: "Today's satellite-image technology means that ... complete privacy does not exist." This apparently means that Google has no responsibility to protect people's privacy.

"We will have to repent in this generation, not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people."
-- Martin Luther King

(P.S. - I emailed Google about this issue in 2006, and got only canned replies, nothing of substance. This profile was added on 4 June 2009. Let's see how long it stays up!)
