A singer-songwriter, guitarist, composer, bandleader,
drummer and entertainer--Santa Cruzan, Richie Begin is one of the California Central Coast's most sought after
Born, in Aruba, Dutch West Indies in 1951, Mr. Begin was raised in a musical family. His Dad played the sax, Mom the piano. Sister and brother are both accomplished musicians. He played percussion and guitar throughout high school, attending Arrowbear Music Camp (the summer music program for the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra headed by conductor Zubin Mehta) and played in high school marching bands and many 60s dance bands. He attended Cal-Polytechnic San Luis Obispo and has been a Central Coast resident since 1976.
Mr, Begin has also served as music and arts writer for Santa Cruz's GOOD TIMES Magazine and has covered the arts scene on the Central Coast since 1979.
Mr. Begin is also one of the founding Artists-in-Residence of the visionary Young at Heart Project--a federally funded non-profit program under the National Arts Council. This innovative program brings the healing power of music into extended care facilities across the nation. Mr. Begin's programs exploring the life and music of Bing Crosby, Irving Berlin and Jimmy Durante have enchanted and enriched the life of seniors all over California.
vocalist and entertainer, Mr. Begin sings, dances and fronts an 8 piece group, The SOUL University, a dance band
that plays all over California for weddings, parties and large company
gatherings. Voted the top vocalist on the Central Coast by magazine reader polls he has a voice that can croon a soul-ballad like Al Green or wail like James Brown or Otis Redding. He has written well over 3000 original compositions and recorded 17 CDS.
His group Soul University is one of the most respected special events dance bands in the state. Each year they headline the New Years Eve extravaganza at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco along with the San Francisco Symphony.
Mr. Begin is well known to area audiences as well as players in the Monterey Peninsula. He has appeared on many local stages in the Monterey-Carmel area--including the Highlands Inn, Lodge at Pebble Beach, Los Laureles Lodge, Sly McFly’s on Cannery Row, the Hyatt Regency Monterey, Ristorante Cibo on Alvarado Street, and many more.
