Introduction

I grew up a horse crazy girl in Florida. The word horse wasn't in my parents' vocabulary or their budget, so I lived out my fantasy in books. I raided library shelves for horse books, the fatter, the better. Then a fourth grade teacher read Marjorie Keenan Rawlings' The Yearling to the class. That's when I realized books were much more than stand-ins for horses.

After high school, I bought my first horse, a buckskin mare named Omaha. Then I took a job at a riding academy while studying for a bachelor's degree in fine art. For twenty years, I coached riders at horse shows and painted portraits of people with their animals. But I always wanted those paintings to tell stories and one day I picked up a pen and began writing a tale about characters I'd drawn in a sketchbook. I've been writing ever since.

My story "The Fog Lifts" won the 2010 Highlights for Children Fiction contest and I was awarded Honorable Mention for Best Young Adult Fiction Writer at Eckerd College's 2013 Writers in Paradise Conference. I live in Florida with my husband, a computer geek and sci-fi/fantasy fan, and Ella and Hobbit, two barely civilized rescued dogs.
