I found my way to type through dance, mathematics, music and calligraphy. I primarily design fonts for minority language groups around the world, but moonlight as the general editor and project leader for ScriptSource, a dynamic, collaborative reference to the writing systems of the world.
I studied typeface design at the University of Reading (MA with distinction) and return there regularly to train and mentor other designers. I am the co-author of the SIL Open Font License and work to bridge the gap between the typographic and open source software communities. My most well-known typeface - Gentium - has been a winner in two international typeface design competitions and is available under an open license.
When I'm not designing type or running ScriptSource, I play guitar and piano, direct and perform with two local theatre groups, am involved in various worshipping communities (both traditional and alternative), teach marriage courses with my lovely wife Sara, and thoroughly enjoy my four interesting and talented children.
I search for deep beauty, and am thankful to have tasted of it in small but profound ways.
